Using Mirrors to Create Space

Tests have proven that home-owners who have mirrors spaced around their house are likely to exhibit more confidence and do better in life. As well as helping to increase one’s self-confidence, mirrors help you with interior decorating issues, particularly if you do not have much space to play around with.

Decorating experts might advise you to use a free standing mirror if you want to create the effect of extra room. If it is a case of a partition that isn’t as large as you might like it to be and you are not thrilled at the prospect of taking down walls or altering the entire furniture with something that will make the room seem wider, a few well-placed whole-wall mirrors might very well do the trick. By reflecting the whole of the room, mirrors give the effect that there is double the space.

But bear in mind, you cannot just go hanging mirrors anywhere you want to. Mirrors will not do any good if large pieces of furniture are blocking the mirrors, for instance. Pick a wall that will give people fewer chances to see their reflections because this could lessen the effect of space you’re trying to create – across from some good oak bookcases could prove an excellent location.

Of course, mirrors come built in with certain pieces of household furniture in some rooms – vanity sinks, for example, will come with a mirror to increase the sense of space.

To create the best illusion of space, study the layout of the room and identify those parts of it that are not likely to be opposite where people will be sitting. Do not forget – the mirrors need not cover the entire surface of the wall, just the whole height. If you get it right, your floor-to-ceiling mirrors can give the illusion that there are passages into other rooms, building the illusion of space.
