Barking Problems ? Is Driving With A Barking Dog Driving You Crazy?
Many a times, while traveling in a car your dog starts barking hysterically every time he sees somebody passing by. This can be annoying to you and the other people around. But your dog doesn’t care about your annoyance and he continues barking as long as he can see an object moving. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a moving object it can be a stationary one like a house for instance. For your dog all objects are the same and all of them trigger a territorial response. You may need to view these many different dog supplies that will be beneficial in the training process.
Of course his insistent barking drives you crazy and of course it is very dangerous since you can’t concentrate on the road, so you in turn yell at him asking him to shut up. When you do so the dog feels that you are sharing his anxiety and you are also yelling with him to ward off the danger. So he continues barking with all his might.
Some training and your tolerance towards his behavior can help you to teach your dog to behave himself while he is out with you and make driving with your dog a pleasant experience for him as well as for you. Here are some ideas that you can try-
To begin with, control your anger and be cool when you see your dog a little upset as this sets an example for him. Instead of scolding him, pat his head and talk to him gently, ask him to calm down by using reassuring words like, “its ok”. He will love the caring and the attention that he is receiving from you and will stop barking. The most important thing here is for you to get a grip on your temper and usually that can be very difficult with a howling dog in the car and howling drivers outside. So take a deep breath and play some soothing music for yourself when your dog barks. You may also need to pick up some cheap dog clothes to keep your dog comfortable on walks and when its cold.
Another way to stop your dog from barking is by splashing some water on him when he is doing so. Since dogs hate to be startled, particularly with a squirt of cold water he will stop barking immediately. Repeat this action whenever he starts barking again but this time in a firm tone, say “no”. Eventually, your dog will start associating the word “no” with something startling and shocking and you won’t have to use a squirt gun anymore because just the command will stop your dog from barking. You will also need some cheap dog crates to aid in the dog training process.
Keep your dog in a crate when you take him out in your car. Make sure that the crate is covered from three sides. Since he will not be able to see things moving around him, he will not get excited and won’t bark. This may however be an issue if you have a big dog but with smaller breeds this solution works very well.
