Physician Job Search FAQ

Sep 23, 2008 @ 11:02 pm by articles

Q: Should I hire a lawyer to review my physician employment contract?

A: In general, yes. We are not lawyers and do not give legal advice. We have reviewed many contracts and can provide you with feedback as to what we have seen as standard. The choice of a lawyer is critical. Find someone well versed in medical contract law, as well as the state’s laws in which you will practice. Try to find an attorney recommended by someone else. Also, make sure the attorney has enough time to review the contract in a timely manner. Negotiations could be hampered by a slowed response time.

Q: If I am a resident, when should I decide upon accepting a position?

A: As a general rule, the earlier the better. The more time you have to work on license applications, hospital privileges, finding a new home and moving arrangements, the less stress you’ll encounter. Many hospitals recruit for summer positions in the fall and early winter. Don’t think all of the “good” physician jobs are taken by the end of winter. We assist physicians throughout the year because contract expirations occur throughout the year. Don’t worry. Have confidence that the right position will be available. Call us, we are here to help!

Q: Who handles negotiations, me or my recruiter?

A: Whenever possible, your recruiter should handle negotiations for physician practice opportunities. Having a liaison reduces the potential for heated arguments between two parties. Keep in mind, professional recruiters regularly perform this task.

Roman Weapons Available for Sale Online

Sep 23, 2008 @ 09:05 pm by articles

If you particepate in SCA combat or Roman reenactment societies, then you’ll want to read this article on the various types of weapons the Roman legions used in battle.  Even is you just collect them or need it for a school play, it’s important to know a quick background on Roman Weapons.

First, you should know that there were 3 important weapons that the Roman used in battle.  All of these had a very important part in combat.  The first of these was the Roman pilum.  This kind of weapon was very much like a spear, except it featured a soft iron shaft that could break upon contact of the enemy, making it impossible to throw back.  Roman weapons like this was what mad the army so superior to others.  However, the cool part was that there was a connector pin made out of soft iron that was meant to break on contact of the enemy (or ground if missed).  This was so the enemy could not pick them up and throw it back.  Each soldier carried up to three or so pila to throw at the enemy before engaging them in hand to hand combat.

The next weapon is probably the most famous, and it was the Roman gladius sword.  This short stabbing sword was the bread and butter of the legions, and it was excellent in close quarters combat.  Used mainly as a thrusting sword, it was very hard to deflect and defend against, and it could be wielded quickly.

The last weapon that most soldiers carried was the Pugio dagger.  This short sword (I mean really short, probably no more than 14 in long) was used as a last resort if they were disarmed of their gladius or pilum.  It was great to be used in conjunction with their shield.  These three weapons were part of the reason why the Roman army was so successful.

How Do Boilers Work?

Sep 23, 2008 @ 05:00 pm by articles

A boiler is an important component of a heating system used in homes, buildings, industries and in making hot water. It is the part that contains water and moves heat in the form of steam from a fuel source such as oil, gas or coal to provide warm air. This is often found in hot water heating systems that convert heated water into steam and returns it to the source to be reused when the air gets cooler.

Specifically, a boiler works by burning natural gas, oil or wood pellet to heat water that goes through hot water tubes or cylinders, radiators or underfloor systems. Boilers can be energy efficient if well maintained, properly set up and their insulation intact and sealed well.

In most residential and small commercial applications, boilers can produce hot water at around 160 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit which is then circulated throughout the system using a pump. At temperature above 212 degrees Fahrenheit, steam is produced.

Types of boilers

Boilers can be closed or open systems. A closed system refers to one which is able to reuse 100 percent of the steam produced by a boiler. In other words, the energy from the steam is converted back into the form of water to be used again in producing heat. A hot water heating system is an example. On the other hand, an open system is one which does not return the condensate back into the boiler as the process of heating may be a source of contamination.

Boilers also come in two basic types – the firetube and the watertube. In the firetube or shell boilers, the fire or the hot gases are directed through the inner part of the tubes situated within the boiler shell surrounded by water. This design type, which is found in 80 percent of boilers, can produce steam of up to a maximum of 25,000 pounds per hour.

In the watertube, the fire or hot gases are directed to and around the exterior of tubes containing water. The boilers in this type are rectangular in shape and have two or more drums. In the top drum is where steam and water are separated while the lower drum acts as a collection point. When a huge amount of steam is needed, this system is very ideal.

How it works

Boilers operate when fuel is supplied to the burner. Natural gas is supplied through the gas pipe, oil or LPG through a pressurized tank while the wood pellet is blown to the burner. Fuel is then mixed with air and ignited.

The next stage is when the fire from the burner and its combustion gases escapes into the boiler. What follows is the transfer of heat to the water that circulates through the heat exchanger within the boiler.

When water is heated, it then produces warm air around the house via the radiators, under-floor heater and hot water tubes.

Keep in mind that boilers have to be regularly cleaned to make it work for a longer period. As they age, boilers that are not well maintained usually become less efficient.

Here are some tips then to follow. Run your boiler for short periods of time. Also, avoid turning it on and off very often as doing so could affect its system. Leave at least a one-hour interval before switching it on again.

Stream Videos

Sep 23, 2008 @ 03:08 pm by articles

I think it is amazing that so few people understand and appreciate the full breadth of movie viewing options that have become available and widespread on the Web. With a couple clicks of a mouse he can go from enjoying that nostalgic childhood tv show through web video to watching tons of television networks from half way around the earth. Desire to see what individuals are watching right now in France or Poland? You can do it now!

And with a couple clicks more of your mouse you can watch free movies online in the form of the latest blockbusters to curious art house films a person won’t find in most DVD retailers. And I’m not discussing poor quality YouTube videos either.

From questionable websites streaming tons of high quality movies to perfectly legitimate and intuitive services from major power houses like Netflix and Amazon, it is now incredibly quick and easy to watch movies on the internet.

Everything you require is a broadband internet connection and a relatively modern web browser. I recommend using either Firefox 2 or 3 and Internet Explorer 7 or 6. I tend to prefer Firefox, but some services such as Netflix still need Internet Explorer to watch their internet videos.

It is also possible for you to download free online movies, but be careful where you go to do this. There is a phenomenon called BitTorrent which makes it surprisingly simple to collect thousands of high quality videos… but in many cases it is illegal.

It is so simple that lots of people innocently fall into this sort of piracy, so be very cautious with such tools and internet sites. Note that this technology involves an automated sharing procedure where what you start to download is automatically uploaded and shared with others even before you have completed downloading, so you might believe you’re not spreading copyrighted material but indeed you are, so please be attentive! Don’t steal!

You don’t need to steal when you have options like the Netflix Free Trial available to you.
